10 Hours of Professional Development
This practical and highly relevant programme is designed specifically for Heads of Year, Pastoral Leaders, Year Team Leaders, Inclusion Leaders and other middle leaders with responsibility for attendance. The training focuses on developing the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to improve attendance, reduce persistent absence and strengthen engagement with pupils and families.
Module 1: Understanding Attendance and Why It Matters (2 Hours)
The national attendance picture and current challenges.
Understanding the link between attendance, attainment, safeguarding and wellbeing.
DfE attendance expectations and guidance.
Attendance as a whole-school responsibility.
Understanding attendance through the lens of belonging and engagement.
Module 2: Attendance Data and Analysis for Middle Leaders (2 Hours)
Understanding DfE attendance bandings.
Identifying attendance trends and patterns.
Using Arbor and attendance dashboards effectively.
Cohort analysis (SEND, PP, year groups, vulnerable pupils).
Moving from data collection to meaningful action planning.
Module 3: Working Effectively with Pupils and Families (2 Hours)
Building positive attendance conversations.
Addressing barriers to attendance.
Conducting effective attendance meetings.
Motivational interviewing techniques.
Developing partnership approaches with parents and carers.
Practical strategies for improving engagement.
Module 4: Early Intervention and Reducing Persistent Absence (2 Hours)
Identifying pupils at risk before attendance declines significantly.
Developing graduated attendance support plans.
Managing pupils within the 90–95% attendance range.
Supporting persistently absent and severely absent pupils.
Working with external agencies and internal support teams.
Module 5: Leadership, Culture and Sustainable Improvement (2 Hours)
Creating a culture where attendance matters.

Leading attendance discussions in year teams.
Monitoring interventions and measuring impact.
